The wacom_config script intends to define several actions on Wacom tablets.

The wacom_config script intends to define several actions on Wacom tablets.

The implemented actions currently are:

  • Toggling the pointing mode between "Absolute" and "Relative".
  • Rotating the tablet orientation by 90° (counter clockwise).
  • Decrease or Increase the sensitivity of the stylus pressure.
  • Get the battery power status of the tablet.
  • Emulate the action associated to the pad Button n° (where N is either 1, 2, 3 or 4). This makes sense if used in conjunction with xbindkeys.
  • (Re)Initialize the wacom_config settings.
  • Display a notification on disconnection.

Configuration steps (recommended)

This script works on command line (run wacom_config without argument to have a description of the subcommands).

Getting notifications.

For each wacom_config action, you should be notified if the notify-send program is available on your system.

Associating actions to the pad buttons

Obviously, using xbindkeys makes it a little bit more functional.

Indeed, if you are using xbindkeys, this allows to bind subcommands to the tablet buttons by adding the following lines in your ${HOME}/.xbindkeysrc file (assuming that the script is located at /usr/local/src/wacom_config):

"/usr/local/src/wacom_config/wacom_config pad_button 1"
     m:0x10 + b:20 (mouse)
"/usr/local/src/wacom_config/wacom_config pad_button 2"
     m:0x10 + b:21 (mouse)
"/usr/local/src/wacom_config/wacom_config pad_button 3"
     m:0x10 + b:22 (mouse)
"/usr/local/src/wacom_config/wacom_config pad_button 4"
     m:0x10 + b:23 (mouse)

Remember that you have to reload xbindkeys to make those changes effective (/e.g./, by running killall -HUP xbinkeys).

Thus, once initialized (by the wacom_config init command), you are able to access to the associated commands by clicking on the tablet buttons.

Automating initialisation process

Additionally, in order to automate the initialization process, you can add an udev rule to make it work.

prompt$ cd /etc/udev/rules.d
prompt$ sudo ln -s /usr/local/src/wacom_config/config/wacom_config.udev_rules 99-wacom-config.rules
prompt$ sudo udevadm control --reload-rules
prompt$ sudo udevadm trigger

From now, your Wacom tablet should be initialized when connected (USB or Bluetooth) and you should be notified on disconnection.

Finally, a default configuration file is provided with this program, which is loaded first. You can also change the settings by creating a .wacom-config file in your home directory. All settings in this file will superseed the default ones.

About wacom-config

This program will be (I Hope) fully described in the french journal "GNU/Linux Magasine" before the end of 2020. A complete an precise reference will be given after publication.
